Large Glass Fronted Haberdashery Unit from Harris & Sheldon, 1920s

1920’s Large Glass Fronted Haberdashery Unit – Harris & Sheldon. Exceptional and fully original large haberdashery unit by Harris & Sheldon, better known as Selphast shop fitters of Birmingham. At the turn of the last century there were a number of prestigious shop fit cabinet makers. Selphast was in the premier league with production in Birmingham and offices in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Belfast. This is an exquisite original cabinet made almost entirely in oak. The cabinet splits in two, the base section has eight substantial drawers, 48L x 50W x 28H internal dimensions. The drawers are beautifully made with dovetail joints and oak drawer boxes. The top section has sixty tray drawers, all oak faced and beautifully made. The highlight of the piece is that it retains the original glass sliding doors, three on the middle section and three on the top section. The glass runs very smoothly in the original brass tracks and unusually the glass is held in stunning original brass runners. The top section also features the original dust brushes which run behind the glass and were designed to minimise dust entering the cabinet. Internal dimensions of the top trays are 44L x 32W x 11H. Our workshop has spent many hours carefully servicing the cabinet, cleaning and waxing the carcass and most importantly making all the drawers run smoothly.
